For the first time after independence, India participated in the Commonwealth Games in 1954. The number of medals crossed 10 for the first time in 1966. India gained momentum after the 1966 Commonwealth Games. After that the number of medals continued to increase. India did its best in hosting 2010.
London 1934: Indian players entered the tournament for the first time. Six athletes competed in 10 track and field events and one wrestling event. India won its first medal then. He was given a silver medal by Rashid Anwar in the men’s 74kg freestyle wrestling event. He is the first Indian sportsperson to win a medal in the Commonwealth Games.
Sydney 1938: India mainly participated in cycling but did not win a single medal.
Vancouver 1954: India entered the Commonwealth Games for the first time since independence in 1947. He did not participate in the 1950 Auckland Commonwealth Games. Athletes from India participated in some sports in 1954 but did not win a single medal.
Cardiff 1958: India got gold medal in Commonwealth Games for the first time. Legendary sprinter Milkha Singh became the first Indian athlete to win a gold in the Commonwealth Games. He finished first in the men’s 440 yard event. In wrestling, wrestler Leela Ram won India gold in the men’s 100kg freestyle event. For the first time this year, Indian women athletes competed in the Commonwealth Games. Track and field athletes Stephanie D’Souza and Elizabeth Davenport took part. In wrestling, Laxmikant Pandey won the silver medal.
Kingston, Jamaica 1966: India did not participate in the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games. In 1966, India got three gold, four silver and three bronze. In this way India won 10 medals. It was the best performance ever. All three golds of India were found in wrestling. Two silver and two bronze also came from the same games. Mohan Ghosh became the first Indian to win a medal in weightlifting and Dinesh Khanna in badminton. Both won silver and bronze medals respectively.
Delhi 2010: India got the opportunity to host the Commonwealth Games for the first time. India did their best this time. He won 101 medals. These included 38 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze medals. India could not repeat such a performance again.
