Achinta Sheuly, who won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games, grew up in poverty. Achint, a resident of Deulpur in Howrah district, lives in a two-room residence. Her mother has kept Anchita’s trophies so far by tying them in a torn sari. When Achinta arrived at her home on Monday after winning a gold medal in the 73 weight category in Birmingham, her mother had rearranged old trophies by placing them on a stool.
After reaching Achinta’s house, her mother Poornima Sheuli was very happy. He said to his younger son, “Now buy a cupboard to hold all your trophies and medals.”
Didn’t even dream that the son would win gold for the country
Poornima Sheuli said, “He did not even dream that his son would win a gold medal for the country. I knew that reporters and photographers would also come when Achinta came. That’s why I had already arranged these trophies and medals by taking out.
People standing in front of the house tell that times have changed
Purnima said, “After the death of her husband Jagat Sheuli in 2013, Alok and Achint have been brought up with great difficulty. God has started showering blessings on us. The number of people gathering in front of our house shows that times have changed. No one will be able to realize how difficult it was for me to raise my two sons. There was a time when some days one had to live without eating anything. I can’t describe the pain of those days.
Weightlifting continued amid troubles
He recalled that Achinta and his elder brother Alok, who is also a weightlifter. Both used to do zari work in a sari factory. Both had to load and unload luggage. Achint’s mother said, she had no option but to send the sons to work. Alok and Achint continued to lift weights despite all the troubles, he said.
Even a piece of bread was hardly available
20-year-old Achinta, who faced many troubles as a child, credits her success to her mother and coach Astam Das. Achinta said, “Mother and coach have played an important role in making me a player. Many people were waiting for Achinta when she reached home. Life has never been easier for me and my family. One roti was hard to come by. With the help of the government, the financial condition of his family will improve a lot.
never give up
Anchita’s coach Astam Das said, “Achinta’s spirit and the sentence of never giving up has brought him gold. He is like my son. Achint is different from everyone I have coached. I have never seen him give up. He has the courage to fight against every obstacle.
