Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the torch of Chess Olympiad at Indira Gandhi Stadium on Sunday. He handed over the torch to five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand. The torch will travel through 75 cities of the country to reach Mahabalipuram, where the 44th Chess Olympiad is being organized from July 28. The PM said that he is proud that such a big international chess event is being organized in his place of birth. Chess spread from India all over the world in the form of Chaturanga, now the torch of Chess Olympiad is coming out from here.
The PM said that through Khelo India, talent is not only being discovered but also being polished. Through these games, work is being done by targeting the 2024 Paris Olympics and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
FIDE President gave torch to PM
During this, FIDE President Arkady Dvarkovic handed over the torch to the PM. The PM said that he is happy that the torch of FIDE Chess Olympiad has been started from India. It is also a matter of happiness that wherever Chess Olympiad will be held now, its torch will start from India.
PM told the Indian team members Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh, Vidit Gujrathi in the Olympiad present in the ceremony to play fiercely in Mahabalipuram. His victory will be a victory of sportsmanship. He said that this time India’s biggest team is playing in the Olympiad. He hopes that this time the Indian team will create a new medal record. The PM said that the country has given sports like wrestling, Malkhamb for physical development and invented games like Chaturanga for mental development.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said that it is a matter of pride to start the torch relay from India. India participated in the Chess Olympiad for the first time in 1956. Today it is happening in India, in which 188 countries will participate. The FIDE President described the torch relay as a symbol of friendship, peace, and the Olympic Movement.
PM played chess from Hampi
PM played chess with female Grand Master Koneru Humpy. He made a ceremonial move to Humpy with white pieces. Chess Federation of India President Dr. Sanjay Kapoor presented the emblem to the PM. Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam is written on the torch.
