“One night, one rock and hundred devils”, Ajay Devgan’s ‘Bhola’ is hidden in these few words. This tale of just one night has action, emotion, some huge twists and turns and a kind of intensity that keeps you hooked. The action thriller is the official Hindi remake of the 2019 Tamil film Kaithi, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.
The film is the story of a father who, after spending 10 years in jail, wants to come out and meet his daughter first. But his destination passes through a path where he encounters ‘hundred devils’. Bhola is an action-thriller, but the premise of its story is emotional.
Bhola (Ajay Devgan) has just come out after serving 10 years in jail and now has only one destination. He wants to meet his daughter, who is growing up in an orphanage. The police are about to take Bhola away when an incident occurs that puts the entire police force in jeopardy. 40 police officers faint at a party at once and they need to be taken to the hospital as soon as possible, otherwise everyone may die. In such a situation, the responsibility of taking everyone to the hospital safely falls on IPS Diana Joseph (Tabu). But she is injured. So, Diana reluctantly seeks Bhola’s help. The two embark on a mission to load 40 unconscious police officers in a truck and take them to the hospital. But Bhola does not know that he is going on a path where he will come face to face with the devils who stand in the way of death. On one side was Diana, a brave and honest police officer, and on the other, the Sikka gang, a drug peddler, wanted to somehow get Diana to know about their drugs worth 1000 crores. But neither Diana nor the devils.. no one knows that they are in front of a rock, which has come after offering death to Mahakal. The story of Bhola’s past life will be shown in the second part of the film i.e. Part 2.
Ajay Devgan looks quite effective in such intense characters. In one scene, he is seen emotional, and in the other, he is seen killing ten goons in a fierce form. Some of the action sequences in the film are quite different and it shows that Ajay Devgan has worked hard on this film. His scenes with Tabu look very natural. Tabu has given her perfect role in the role of IPS Diana. However, a few more action scenes were expected from him as well. Well, Deepak Dobriyal surprises in his character Ashwathama. It was a nice change from comedy films to see him doing such a negative role. Sanjay Mishra, Vineet Kumar, Gajraj Rao, Makrand Deshpande have done a good job in supporting roles. Amala Paul makes a cameo appearance, but fails to make much of an impact.
This is Ajay Devgn’s fourth directorial venture after U Me Aur Hum, Shivaay and Runaway 34. Right from the beginning, there was a lot of discussion about the action scenes of the film and after watching the film, we can say that Ajay Devgan as a director has worked hard on it. At the same time, along with action, the combination of emotion is also important, which is shown in Bhola. The special thing is that Ajay Devgan has tried to keep Bhola a little different from the original film. Perhaps this thing works in favor of the film. Also, the decision to cast Tabu in the film looks very accurate. There are some shortcomings in the screenplay of the film, especially in the first half. Also, a little more work could have been done on the depth of the characters.
techno and music
The music of the film is composed by Ravi Basrur while the lyrics are penned by Irshad Kamil. However, apart from “Nazar Lag Jayegi”, none of the songs in the film remain memorable. “Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna” in the background grabs your attention but is not particularly effective. The cinematography of the film is done by Aseem Bajaj, which makes a lot of impact. The film was shot in just one night and in two setups. On one side the story of Lalganj police station is visible, and on the other side of Bhola and Diana sitting in the truck. But the amazing thing about Aseem Bajaj’s camera is that every moment you get a chance to watch something exciting. The editing and background score of the film could have been done a little more.
Ajay Devgan and Tabu’s ‘Bhola’ impresses despite some shortcomings in the screenplay. The dialogues and action of the film are very strong. Especially if you are a fan of Ajay Devgan, then you must watch Bhola in theatres. There is no doubt that it gives a special experience on the big screen. 3.5 stars to Bhola from Filmbeat.
Ajay Devgn and Tabu starrer action thriller film ‘Bholaa’ is releasing in theaters on March 30, 2023. This film is pure mass, high on action and emotion.
