Pakistan News: In Pakistan’s troubled North Waziristan tribal district, unidentified assailants attacked an anti-polio vaccination team and killed three people. The gunmen killed a team member and two policemen guarding the team. The team was conducting a door-to-door anti-polio vaccination campaign after nine new cases of polio were reported this year in the district bordering Afghanistan. Police has started investigation of the murder. So far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
There have been attacks on polio vaccination workers in Pakistan
Attacks on anti-polio vaccination campaign activists have increased in Pakistan in recent days. In March this year, gunmen shot dead a female polio worker in northwest Pakistan while she was returning home after participating in the country’s latest anti-polio campaign.
In northwestern Pakistan itself, in January last year, armed gunmen shot and killed a police officer guarding a team of polio vaccine operators. According to the World Health Organization, Pakistan, along with Afghanistan, remains the last polio-endemic country in the world.
Pakistan launched anti polio campaign in May
In May this year, Pakistan launched a nationwide anti-polio campaign to vaccinate more than 43 million children after cases of the crippling virus emerged in the country.
PM Shahbaz Sharif inaugurated the second polio campaign of the year 2022 at the Prime Minister’s residence and assured that the government will take all measures to eliminate this serious disease.
