hear the news

MR Poovamma, one of the country’s top 400m athletes who won three gold medals at the Asian Games, has been banned for three months. He found it expensive to drink decoction to increase the body’s immunity to protect against corona. The decoction was found to contain banned methyl hexaniamine (MHA) included in WADA’s list of Specified Substances.

However, Arjuna Awardee Poovamma proved before the NADA hearing panel that he had not intentionally consumed the banned drug. The hearing panel also imposed a ban of three months instead of four years, providing relief to him. The ban on them will come into effect from June 16, the date of the verdict.

Testing was done in Belgium lab
Poovamma’s sample was taken by NADA on 18 February 2021 during the Indian Grand Prix held at NIS Patiala. In the testing done in the lab to Belgian doe, MHA was found in her sample on March 5, 2021. On 22 April, Poovamma got B sample done, which got the same result on 3 May.

Being a specified substance, she did not get a temporary ban and during this time she continued to participate in competitions. His case was heard for the first time before NADA on 10 January 2022.

Banned drug found in decoction testing
Poovamma told the Vineet Dhandha-led panel that he drank a decoction of a company, which included things like ashwagandha, nutmeg, cinnamon, to increase immunity to protect against corona.

Also, recovery expert Andrei Filiminov, who was involved in the camp, gave him a nasal drop, but he did not mention it on the dope control form while giving the sample. They thought these were common things. He got the decoction tested from a lab in Noida, in which myrsin, a metabolite of MHA, was found, which was extracted from the geranium plant.

Based on this report, the panel agreed that Poovamma had deliberately not taken the drugs. Also, citing WADA’s Rule 10.6, citing about 100 dope samples taken before him, did not consider him guilty of willfully consuming drugs. But convicted of not writing the name of the decoction and nasal drop on the dope control form, imposed a three-month ban.

Relay team is not landing in Birmingham
It is believed that it was only after Poovamma was banned that the Athletic Federation decided not to field the 400m relay team in the Commonwealth Games. Poovamma has won four medals in the 4x400m relay at the Asian Games, including three gold and one bronze.
