Many organizations are now coming forward to reduce the cases of drink and drive. Recently the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has developed a technology that will detect if the driver is under the influence of alcohol in the car. This detection system can be installed as standard in all variants of all types of cars.
Several cameras and sensors are used inside the car for this detection system. The cameras and sensors inside the car keep a check on the gesture and reaction of the driver. In the event of intoxication, the system detects changes in the driver’s behavior and sounds a loud alarm to alert him or stops the vehicle by gradually reducing the speed.
This system works just like the sleep detection system in the car. According to the information, research is being done to make this new system more effective. Experts expect the system to be used to prevent accidents in the car soon after the tests are completed.
According to the NTSB report, 32 people lose their lives every day in the US due to drunk driving. At the same time, the death toll in drink and drive cases reaches 11,000 in a year. In 2021, drink and drive cases in the US increased by 5 percent.
Drunk driving in India is also a major challenge for the safety of people on the roads. In the year 2020, a total of 8,300 people died due to drunk driving in India, which is a huge figure.
Looking at the cases of road accidents across the world, India has the highest number of people who die in road accidents. On an average 1.5 lakh people lose their lives in road accidents every year in India. A total of 1,20,806 people died in road accidents during the year 2020. Most of the victims of these accidents were youth.
Overspeeding was cited as the main cause of accidents in the 2020 Road Accidents Report. Over speeding accounted for 69.3% of accidents, while driving on the wrong side of the road accounted for 5.6% of accidents. The largest number of vehicle categories involved in road accidents were two-wheelers. Whereas light vehicles like cars, jeeps and taxis are in second place together.
