Pakistan Punjab CM Pervez Elahi Oath: Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI)-backed leader Pervez Elahi has been made the new Chief Minister of Punjab Province. Pak President Arif Alvi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Parvez Elahi early Wednesday at Aiwan-e-Sadar. Pervez Elahi took oath as the new Chief Minister following the Supreme Court’s decision against the decision of Dost Mohammad Mazari, Deputy Speaker of Punjab Legislative Assembly.
A three-member Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandiyal, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Muneeb Akhtar had ordered Punjab Governor Bali-ur-Rehman to administer the oath to Elahi, but the governor refused to do so. That’s why President Arif Alvi administered the oath to Elahi.
Elahi had left for Islamabad late on Tuesday night to administer the oath of office by the President following a refusal by the Punjab governor. According to reports, President Alvi had sent a special plane to bring Elahi. Earlier, the top court had termed Mazari’s decision illegal in the election of Punjab CM and ruled that the PTI candidate would be the new CM of Elahi province.
Elahi got 186 votes, compared to 179 for another candidate, Hamza. Earlier, after the Supreme Court’s decision to form Elahi Si Kom, PTI supporters gathered at Liberty Chowk in Lahore to celebrate. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief and former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan had asked his supporters to celebrate the Supreme Court’s decision.
