SMEV said everything is going well for electric vehicles except for fire incidents; Rise in the price of petrol, new products with a good range are coming, due to which the customers are getting the courage to use EVs. In such a situation, we can expect that the sales of electric two wheelers are going to increase by 2-3 times.
Even after the fire, at present orders of 5000 – 10,000 units are placed with all the big EV companies and there is a waiting period of 45 -60 days for these. According to SMEV, sales of all types of electric vehicles have doubled from January to May. During this, 3,17,890 units of vehicles have been sold in 2022 as against 78,903 units in 2021.
This figure does not include e-rickshaws and low-speed electric two-wheelers (which do not require registration) or else the figures could be even bigger. Let us tell you that the sales of two wheelers with ICE engines have come down drastically and the situation has not improved since Kovid. Where before Kovid, 14 lakh two-wheelers were sold per month, it has now stopped to just 11 lakh units.
EVs can be cheap
NITI Aayog has proposed to reduce the GST rate on lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles. At present, an excise and service tax (GST) of 18 per cent is applicable on lithium-ion batteries. With this decision of the government, the GST rate on batteries will be reduced to only 5 percent. Explain that the GST rate on electric vehicles is also 5 percent.
NITI Aayog, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Heavy Industries and other government departments held their first meeting on 7 June on battery-swapping policy. Taxes on electric vehicle batteries as well as standardization of batteries to ensure interoperability were also on the agenda of the meeting.

Talking about the sales of electric scooters, Ola Electric, which was top in sales in April 2022, has now fallen to the second position, while Okinawa has now become the largest scooter seller.
Okinawa sold the highest number of scooters in the country last month, leaving behind Ola Electric and Hero Electric in sales. According to the data from the vehicle portal, Okinawa has sold 9,290 electric scooters in May 2022. However, sales have come down as compared to 11,011 units sold in April 2022. Last month, Ockhi-90 was the company’s best-selling scooter.
